Half-Day Montserrat Tour

Explore Catalan culture and architecture at Santa Maria de Montserrat

WITH
Gregorio | about the guide

This private tour is the ideal way to plunge into Catalan history, culture and architecture at the Santa Maria de Montserrat. Perched on the Montserrat Hill, south-west of Barcelona, this Benedictine abbey has been a sacred place of worship for more than 1,000 years. Today, the monastery has two main sections: a Basilica and monastery, home to the resident monks; and buildings dedicated to visitors including restaurants, gift shops and hostels. Preserving its traditional way of life, the Benedictine community eats, sleeps and prays according to a tight communal schedule and also runs a music school for boys, whose world-famous choir performs to visitors daily. Admire the stunning architecture, learn more about the Benedictine community at the interactive exhibition and see the sacred wooden Black Madonna, which has become a symbol of Catalonia and place of pilgrimage. You are welcomed to touch the Black Madonna, although please be prepared for lengthy queues. If you decide to have lunch at Montserrat, please let your guide know in advance. You can have a traditional meal with breathtaking views of the surrounding national park at the monastery itself.

Born in a small village in the middle of Spain, but raised in Barcelona, I have always been passionate about my beautiful city and its unique character; that's why I decided to go back to school to become an official tour guide after several years working for the Spanish administration in a boring office. As a tour guide, what I enjoy the most is meeting new people and creating links between people; because what makes the beauty and the interest of a city are the people; the ones who live there but also the ones who come and visit, who see the different aspects with their own eyes and always showing me a new way to see it. My specialty is to give visitors a real feeling and experience of how people live, think and act in this part of the world. I also enjoy sharing what Barcelona and Catalonia have to offer, so I always try to integrate and connect everything: what to see, to admire, the details, the history behind, the secret paths ect… Even though I have a complete knowledge of Barcelona and its different points of interests, one of my favorite theme is the architecture, which is a huge part of the city's culture.

The tour was amazing and Gregorio was the perfect guide. Travel was very comfortable. Gregorio is so knowledgeable about the region and the local history that we felt that we had many tours in one. Montserrat is amazing and I feel that a private tour was really the best way to explore the venue, We could not recommend this tour and Gregorio more enthusiastically!

"The tour and Gregorio were great except we did not have enough time as our ship had to sail 4 hours ahead of schedule. Gregorio was accommodating and trying to rearrange the itinerary to our need. Thank you very much. Barney G. - USA"
